Well, it appears all our wishes and hopes that Johan Santana would be healthy, at this point, have been answered.? Seems like, however, we forgot about the rest of the team.
Just saw on Metsblog.com that Tim Byrdak will have knee surgery, and of course, David Wright has yet to play in a game, and Ike has his issues, and Hairston is hurt and so is Nieuwenhuis and Duda should be back today and well, it's only 11 am, so we have plenty of time for some more bad news today. Oh, and of course, Jason Bay still stinks.
The Wright rib cage injury (along with Hairston and Nieuwenhuis) has forced the Mets to revisit their training routines. Martino reports today that Collins had ordered his players to put more effort into stretching, make sure they stay hydrated and reduce the amount of swings taken during BP.
Wright is actually flying back to New York to for some sort of ultrasound and maybe a cortisone shot. I think someone said this during the Ike scare, but shouldn't the Mets at this point have a doctors office in PSL. Would save a lot on airfare. No?
As for Collins' approach, really? Drink more, swing less. That's our new motto. Ya know, that doesn't sound too bad. Maybe with Wright and Hairston, it's all those swings and misses that are the problem. Only the Mets.
As for Johan, he looked good - health wise - yesterday. You wonder, however, if he can get his velocity up and if he doesn't, how much that hurts the effectiveness of his changeup.
I saw some of Greg's points on Loewen in the last post about him being the backup outfielder. Not sure on that one either way, but I think we all need to start accepting that not too many gold gloves will be coming our way this season.
Aside from Ike and Tejada - and I guess Torres and Bay to an extent - most of our guys should only be wearing gloves when it's cold outside (I think Ralphie once said that about Kingman).?
No TV today against the Tigers. So that means no in-game updates from around Florida.
Finally, since he's now an ex-Met, I'm going to take a shot at Reyes. The Mets and Marlins have played three times this year (twice at PSL) and Reyes hasn't played yet. Eddie C. said he should play Thursday in Jupiter, but can Reyes show his face in PSL just once? What, is he afraid of facing the media? I mean, please. If he loves the fans so much, give the Mets who trek down to Florida a little thrill.
Enjoy the day and Let's Go Mets.
