UNION CITY -- A one-alarm fire Tuesday evening left an elderly man with minor injuries and his home uninhabitable, an Alameda County fire official said.
The man was treated at an East Bay hospital for smoke inhalation and a burn to his hand, Battalion Chief Kris Kerstetter said.
About 20 firefighters responded to a 5:23 p.m. report of the blaze at a residence on the 4500 block of Sandra Court, near Regents Boulevard, Kerstetter said.
They used four fire engines, a truck and a heavy rescue vehicle to contain the blaze within 15 minutes, he said.
The fire, which caused an estimated $75,000 in damage, appears to have started in the property's tool shed and spread to the home, fire officials said.
The house sustained too much damage for its two residents to live there, Kerstetter said.
The injured resident -- a 78-year-old man -- and his wife plan to stay with relatives in the area, authorities said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation, Kerstetter said.
