Since Pavoni’s debut in 2010, the Montreal-based label quickly gained popularity both at home and abroad, with its collection sold in the U.S., UK, Asia and the Middle East. Childhood friends Gianni Falcone and Mike Derderian are the men behind the line, which is celebrated for its high-glamour gowns worn by the likes of Fergie and Katy Perry.

Pavoni travels to Toronto for Toronto Fashion Week to show its fall 2012 collection on March 12 at 9 p.m.

Q: What was the first piece you ever made?

Derderian: That would be the Kristine dress because it went to an up-and-coming singer, Kristine Elezaj. It was a long, silk chiffon, draped dress with blush/nude colour. It came off the shoulder, and it was form-fitting.

Q: Your first big fashion disaster?

Derderian: We purchased over 70 yards of silk organza fabric to make something that’s really dramatic. After having worked on it for about four days and cutting and sewing and stitching all these ruffles onto a train that ended up becoming about five metres, we woke up in the morning and saw that it looked like a cupcake. We removed everything. We started from scratch.

Q: What is something new you’re using or doing this season?

Falcone: We just came up with these corset sort-of lines that go in at the waist and a little out at the hip.

Q: What was the first piece you made for this collection?

Derderian: We decided to make an entire dress on the concept of a necklace. Basically, it goes from the neckline, and it continues onto the dress. It is done in a silk-illusion tulle, so it’s almost transparent, and we’re layering it on top of lace, basically, that is dyed in the colour of the collection, which is that red rose . . . It’s all done in crystals and bugles, which is a glass-type of material that has a really high shine to it.

Q: What’s the first piece you’ll send down the runway?

Derderian: We’ve pleated silk organza roses on a dress that is also beaded on a silk tulle, so it almost looks like it’s tattooed on the bottom.

Q: What is the first thing you’ll do after showing your collection?

Falcone: I’m going to have a nice glass of champagne with my partner. And I’m going to have a nice toast with Mike.

Q: Where was your first ever international sale?

Derderian: There were two sisters. One has a store in Abu Dhabi and one has a store in Kuwait. They were the first ones to actually place an order.
