HAYWARD -- A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of stabbing a supermarket employee who had accused him of shoplifting, police said.
The victim, a 30-year-old Fremont man, was stabbed multiple times and taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Lt. Roger Keener said.
Gerry Grimes, of Hayward, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, Keener said. He is being held without bail at the Hayward city jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
About 5:40 p.m., police said Grimes left Lucky supermarket at 22555 Mission Boulevard near A Street and was confronted by an employee who asked him to return stolen property.
The suspect then pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the man at least four times, Keener said.
An officer arrived and found several people holding Grimes down on the ground, and he was taken into custody without incident, authorities said.
The suspect suffered cuts on his fingers during the incident and his injuries were treated, police said.
Anyone with information about the stabbing can call the Crime Stoppers of Southern Alameda County anonymous tip line at 510-293-7197.
