A Novato woman was arrested Tuesday on allegations she embezzled more than $300,000 from a San Rafael company, police said.

Imelda Lavitoria, 45, was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of embezzlement, possession of bad checks and making or passing fictitious checks. Her bail was set at $308,345, the amount of the alleged loss.

The alleged victim is the Robert Butler Co., a property management and brokerage firm on Grand Avenue, said San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher. The company contacted police five weeks ago after it discovered financial discrepancies and conducted an audit.

The suspect was identified as Lavitoria, a 17-year employee who works as an account manager, Rohrbacher said. Investigators suspect the embezzlement began in 2009.

An initial court appearance is pending.

The property management company has been in business for 30 years, according to its website.
